Tuesday Aug 27, 2019
Tuesday Aug 27, 2019
Whether or not your adult child with ASD has a drivers license is based on many things such as motor skills (pun intended), anxiety level and other things. Some ASD adults are able to drive and do it well, while others are unable to drive for various reasons. Some are able to drive but are too anxious or overwhelmed by the DMV (who isn't?), test taking and driving with a stranger in the car. There are so many things we just don't think of!
Join Stacy and Anne as we unpack this topic. Stacy is currently fretting over her son's lack of driving. Anne's daughter got her license when she was 18. Together they have an active discussion filled with tips and topics as they unpack autism and driving.

Raising an ASD kid can lead to great loneliness for the moms. Many give up their job, their career and stay home full time with a child that may have too many challenges to take out of the house. Are you bound by your routine and all of the needs your child has? Moms of ASD kids also struggle with shame, blame and others not understanding their child. Perhaps their child doesn't get invited to the parties and thus neither do you because people are uncomfortable with the unpredictable behavior your special needs child exhibits. There are just so many reasons to experience isolation.
But moms of special needs kids need friends as much as every other mom, if not more! We need people who "get" us and our kid. We need to go out and let our hair down with our girlfriends! Join Stacy and Anne as they unpack this topic today.

Moms Unpacking Autism, Ep 4, Is Autism a Gift?
Tuesday Aug 27, 2019
Tuesday Aug 27, 2019
Well here's a loaded topic! Many new moms these days are talking about autism as if it's a gift. "Isn't it wonderful that we are learning all these new ways to love, or learning to live selflessly. It's so rewarding having a child with autism". Well is it?
Don't get us wrong. We love our kids and yes, we have learned many lessons on acceptance, grace, patience and love. We understand that people are trying to make neurodiversity more accepted so that our kids will also have a place in this world and not be judged. But the truth is, that no amount of campaigning changes the fact that our children find themselves to be more lonely in adulthood and have more trouble with depression. It's a hard road to take. And while we want to see our children thrive in this world, we believe that calling it a gift, is not going to bring that about. What it does is put guilt on moms that are grieving and struggling with the day to day reality of raising kids on the spectrum. We believe in honesty and in having a place to process our feelings of loss. Listen as Stacy and Anne unpack this on Moms Unpacking Autism.
